TL;DR

We designed a simplified, centralized and streamlined platform that replaces IU’s fragmented processes with a single desktop app that integrates workflows, dashboards, and services. Users can manage hosting, accessibility, and content with fewer clicks and less frustration—setting the stage for future automation and integration.

Project Highlights:

  1. People-First Workflows

  2. Centralized Service Access

  3. Workflow Optimization & Efficiency

  4. Automation-Ready Foundations

Overview

The intent was to rethink a service platform…

Create a single, streamlined platform that centralizes services, simplifies workflows, and makes it easy for staff and faculty to request and launch websites and apps—without the frustration of juggling multiple tools.

Through cycles of exploring, diagramming, and sketching, we discovered what users really needed: clarity, transparency, and control.

How might we design a web platform that unifies web hosting services, streamlines processes, and keeps users informed every step of the way?

People-First Workflows
People-First Workflows

The core goal was to prioritize users—IU staff and faculty juggling multiple tools. We mapped existing workflows, identified pain points, and designed clear, reduced number of steps for every task. Simplified request forms integrated with APIs within the app, and dashboards reduced confusion and cognitive load.

Centralized Service Access
Centralized Service Access

Multiple services—hosting, content management, accessibility reports—were scattered across IU systems. This web app centralizes them into a single platform, letting users access everything from one dashboard. The result: less time hunting for information, more time delivering outcomes.

Workflow Optimization & Efficiency
Workflow Optimization & Efficiency

By integrating APIs and streamlining processes, this app reduces redundant steps and manual requests. Staff can now perform tasks that previously took multiple clicks in one place. Metrics: ~30–40% faster task completion.

Transparency and Communication
Transparency and Communication

One of the biggest frustrations for IU staff and faculty was not knowing the status of their requests or updates across multiple tools. This app tackles this with clear, timely updates directly in the app—notifications, progress indicators, and status dashboards give users visibility into every step. Users can see exactly what’s happening, when, and who is responsible, reducing uncertainty and follow-up emails. The result: more trust, less frustration, and smoother collaboration across departments.

Reflections and Learnings

Working on the Web@IU pltaform was a deep dive into enterprise UX for large-scale systems. Designing for IU staff, faculty, and multiple departments taught me how crucial clarity, transparency, and communication are in a professional context. Integrating fragmented tools highlighted the importance of mapping real workflows before designing, and how small UI touches—like status notifications and progress indicators—can dramatically improve user trust and satisfaction.

I also learned that balancing immediate usability with future scalability is key in enterprise projects. Every decision—from API integration to dashboard layout—needed to consider current efficiency and long-term flexibility.
